The Ndebele people of South Africa make up the Nguni tribes which represent two thirds of South Africa's Black population. Ndebele rings were traditionally worn by Ndbele women and signified a wife's bond and faithfulness to her family and husband. It also symbolized the wife's social status. The rings, referred to as idzilla were made of brass and copper and were worn permanently. Today, it is no longer a cultural practice for women to wear the rings permanently.
In our modern age, women wear them for fashion and to represent their African heritage and culture.
